The Minority Report
from One in a Million by Priscilla Shirer
read pages 137-141
read Number 13:18-20
What were the spies sent to discover about:  the people, the land, the cities?
Deut. 1:22 reveals that God allowed Moses to send the spies because it is what the Hebrew children wanted.  It seemed there was an option in their mind as to whether they might enter the Promised Land at all!  Perhaps if the land looked impregnable, the decision of Moses should be to forego assault.  However, the fact is that God had already given them a specific word regarding Canaan:  He would give it to them  (Num. 13:1-2).  THIS REVEALED A MISTRUST OF GOD BY A MAJORITY OF THE PEOPLE!
Have you ever been discouraged by well-meaning Christians who questioned your eagerness to experience  more of God?
Against whom or what might you have to bravely stand to embrace God's promises to you?
Let's pray as a group about this.
Only Joshua and Caleb chose to trust God at His word.
Even though some Christians might choose to enjoy questionable forms of entertainment, to halfheartedly adhere to spiritual disciplines, or to stay in the "safe-zone" of comfortable Christianity, do you choose to believe God though you must sometimes stand alone to do it!!!!!!!!??????

Believing God-
Conquering Canaan will require a lifelong commitment to courage, our posts, and our position in the minority.  Taking God at His word isn't popular sometimes.
Do you desire to adopt a radical lifestyle faith???
We must remain rooted in the facts of God's promises to us!
Read Numbers 13:27-28   What did the spies find that validated God's promise to them.  What caused them to question God?
Read Numbers 14:7-9  How do you think faith influenced Joshua and Caleb's perception of the land?
How did the spies' conclusion clash with Joshua's and Caleb"s?
It is strange to note that even after receiving bounty that they could touch and even taste (fruits), the Israelite spies spent more time and energy focusing on the possibility of defeat than on god's promise of victory.
List 3 things you believe God has asked you to believe Him for in your life.
List the things that make it difficult for you to trust.

"Doubt see the obstacles...Faith sees the way!
Doubt sees the darkest night...Faith sees the day!
Doubt dreads to take a step...Faith soars on high!
Doubt questions, "Who Believes?"...Faith answers, "I!"

read Numb. 13:31
We can't conquer life's trials on our own, but God allows us to overcome with His help.
Remember, the spies' report wasn't fictitious.  The cities did prove fortified, and the inhabitants were fierce...this was all true!  The problem with the report was that the spies allowed valid concerns to weigh more heavily than God's word and their confidence in it.
As Christians, we must not live as people more directed by human reasoning than by faith.

Trusting:
Following just facts leads us down a dangerous, slippery trail that can end only in failure (Keller).  Keller identifies the four fatal steps as :  facts, fear, fantasy of foreboding, and failure.
1.  facts---always look unbeatable and discouraging
2.  Fear---implanted by the Enemy
3.  Fantasy of foreboding ---creating a "what if" scenario
4.  Failure---refusal to carry out God's plan
Numbers 14:37-38 explains that the spies who followed the steps to disaster "died by a plague before the Lord."

Be blessed as we hold onto God's promises,
Becky
Do you place more weight on the things God has asked you to believe or in the things that make it difficult?

Willingness to Take Your Post
read pages 133-137  "One in a Million" by Priscilla Shirer
read Ex. 17:8-13
List the task assigned to each person:   Moses, Aaron, Hur, Joshua
Historical credit for the victory against the Amalekites has been given to Aaron and Hur.  Joshua's job seemed less impressive, but far more dangerous.  What tasks to which you are currently called don't always feel as worthwhile as you could wish? Often we become so consumed with envy over what God asks someone else to do that we fail to do what God asks of us...without complaining.  Since promised-land living is largely about knowing, accepting, and doing God's will for us, we must follow Joshua's example.  He willingly, without complaint or fuss, fulfilled the role appointed to him.

Which of these assignments seems most appealing to you?:
Leading worship
changing diapers
teaching Bible studies
working at a corporate job
helping an elderly person shop for groceries
attending seminary
evangelize overseas
coaching little league
singing solos
singing in choir....

It can be difficult to stay focused on our task when credit for the victory often goes to others while we fight over-looked battles.  We must come to understand that the task God has given us in this season of our lives is just as important to the health of the church and the over-all Kingdom of God  as leading missions programs and singing solos in the church choir.
(Look over the examples on page 134-135 in your book)  can you relate?

Body Parts
Read I Cor. 12:1, 4-31
answer true or false:
____ Everyone has the same spiritual gifts
____Only some believers are given spiritual gifts
____spiritual gifts are given for the common good of the entire body of Christ
____Spiritual gifts are given to believers as the Spirit sees fit.
____All gifts are equally necessary and valuable.
God designed each gift to enable a believer to accomplish His calling on his/her life.  Contentment with our circumstances comes as we rest in and utilize the gifts God provides.

Why Me?  Why Now?
Joshua could have asked these two questions when asked to select an army to exact vengeance on a formidable foe.  Moses saw Joshua's potential and called him to act on it.  Has anyone ever seen in you something you did not see in yourself?  How did their belief in you affect your atitude and effort toward the job you'd been asked to do?  I personally feel very strongly about encouraging others in their giftings.  We should look daily for opportunities to encourage others to serve God faithfully where they are planted.  Compliment them....cheer them on....recognize the good that they do....give them a smile or a hug....tell them you are proud to be their friend.
How does Jeremiah 1:5 answer the question "Why Me"?
How does Ecc. 3:1-8 answer "Why Now"?
The success of God's people depends on the Joshuas, the Aarons, and the Hurs all doing their parts for the glory of God. Do a quick heart-check: Are you assisting or detracting from the body of Christ's ability to function well? To experience all that God has for us and for the church to experience all that God has for her, we must be willing to take our posts.

Read the following and describe how a willingness to take on the assigned post was imperative to each person's successful entry into Canaan:
Joshua:   Joshua 1:1-2
Reubenites, Gadites, and Manasseh:   Joshua 1:12-16
The Children of Israel:   Joshua 3:3-4

May we have holy courage to accept our post,
Becky

___________
Aspiring to Abundance
read pages 129-132  "One in a Million" by Priscilla Shirer
Of the 2 million Hebrews who left Egypt with Canaan in mind,  2 would eventually walk on this promised land!  The Israelites' new leader, Joshua, was truly one in a million.
Just as most of the Israelites failed to rely fully on God, many modern Christ followers fall short of placing full confidence in God's power and abilities.
Among Christians you know, is it:
______easy
______somewhat easy
______difficult
______very difficult
to think of someone who is experiencing abundant life in Christ?
Look on Page 160 in your book and mark the items on your Promised-Land Living list that you fully expect to experience.  Why are there some on the list difficult to mark?
Let's look at the characteristics of Joshua.
"Courage to Come when Called" - Courage is the attitude of facing...anything recognized as dangerous, difficult, or painful instead of withdrawing from it.
The similarities between Moses and Joshua are:
unlikely candidates for leadership
Moses-shepherd....Joshua-a brick-making slave
Both called/no prior training.
compare and contrast Joshua's and Moses' responses to God's call:
Joshua-Exodus 17:10
Moses-Exodus 3:11,13; 4:1,10
One HUGE Difference between two men:COURAGE
Courage is not the absence of fear.  It is the will to move forward in spite of it!
Prior to Ex. 17 we find no record of Joshua leading the people in any way.  However, he obeyed when called and showed great courage.  The result of his courage was a victorious win over a formidable foe (Ex. 17:13-14)
How did God respond to Moses' excuses?(Ex. 4:14)
What does Joshua's lack of excuses reveal about his level of faith?
Has God called you to do something for which you are making excuses?  Share some of these excuses with the group.
What do excuses regarding why you can't do what God asks reveal about how you view yourself?  How you view God?
Notice that God assured Moses that he could do what God called him to do.

"Living Courageously"
read Joshua 1:6-7,9
Joshua took the leadership role 38 years after his first battle with the Amalekites.
Stepping into the abundant life of promised-land living takes courage.  Just like in Joshua's days, few of God's people today will follow you to abundant life.  The battles you will fight and the unconventional means by which the Lord may ask you to fight them will require a firm commitment to do as God asks.  We can't allow fear to creep in.  As you begin to feel a divine tugging in your heart and explore spiritual abundance by opening your ears to God's voice and looking for the manifested presence of God around you be sure you will draw the Enemy's attention.  The enemy knows that once you enter the abundant life of Canaan you will never want to leave.  His goal is to scare you off before you taste the milk and honey!

Let's adopt the motto:  "I am strong and courageous!"
study Rahab - Joshua 2:15-24
         the Priests - Joshua 3:6, 15-16

Becoming more strong and courageous,
Becky

PS:  Please continue to pray for Roger and Reinhold.  They left Romania today headed for Israel then on to Turkey.  They went into the tunnels and basements to minister to the impoverished Gypsy people yesterday.  They spent several days serving an orphanage there too.  God's hand is upon them.  God has certainly helped them to be "strong and courageous".
